courtyards

The new Almshouse layout is based on a remodelling of the traditional courtyard forms, creating sheltered social spaces that give access to the ground floor flats and communal rooms.

The circulation areas on the upper floors over-look the courtyards, with natural light and views out that help with navigation around the building.

gardens

A series of gardens and roof terraces was designed around the Almshouse to provide views and easy access to outdoor spaces from every flat, and a variety of routes for walks around the site.
A comprehensive strategy was drawn up with the landscape architects to incorporate 50no mature trees on part of the site that was once a Victorian vicarage.
