The successful strategy was to remove the ‘modern’ partitions and other alterations that had been added over time and to restore the original Georgian layouts of the principle rooms, rebuilding walls and repairing ‘like-for-like’ the damaged cornices and skirting boards etc.
A ‘loose fit’ within the historic room layout was not possible due to the need for small cellular spaces to provide the appropriate levels of intimacy, privacy (visual + acoustic), surveillance and security for the variety of activities taking place in a modern health centre.
The smaller cellular spaces and a new internal staircase were designed as ‘pieces of furniture’ within the principle rooms, with integrated service elements for lighting, data cabling and drainage. This would allow removal of these elements in future if desirable.
